Each One Teach One
BROWN GIRLS CLIMBING PROGRAM
Our Story
Our vision to close the nature, recreation and adventure gap; elevating Black and Brown joy, starts with the youngest generation through education, imploring sportswomanship, and cultivating a viable community culture inherent of diversity. Brown Girls Climbing is the nature-based adventure leadership program elevating girls of color in sports and outdoor recreation in the United States. Brown collectively represents the primary investment focus of the spectrum of a multi-diverse diaspora. Prioritizing social-emotional development, centering strength, independence and autonomy of Girls we expand representation and opportunities for full participation of exploration. Historically, female heroines from Queen Amanirenas of Kush to Harriet Tubman have have climbed great hills, mountains and rocks to freedom. With the Each One, Teach One philosophy deeply rooted into the fabric of our program, Climbing is more than a metaphor, it’s our inspiring motivation for a future of equal access for the next generation.
“My daughter has been with Emily since she was six years old, and the experience has been profoundly transformative—far beyond outdoor skill-building alone. Through rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, surfing, paddleboarding, kayaking, rope work, and equestrian experiences, Emily created spaces where a Brown girl could see herself as capable, confident, and fully belonging in environments where she is often underrepresented. The psychological and emotional impact of this representation—building self-trust, leadership, and a strong sense of identity—has been just as meaningful as the physical skills gained. Emily’s mentorship has been instrumental in supporting my daughter’s growth into a grounded, capable, compassionate, and self-assured young woman.
After 25 years establishing an independent top 5 ranked youth team of elite youth and ability climbers in Atlanta, Georgia, Coach Emily Taylor and young daughter sovereignly travelled 2 months across America curiously exploring every stop. Through the journey, her daughter fell in love with adventure, exploration and finally rock climbing.
Arriving in the Bay Area, her daughter took up an interest in climbing and noticed immediately the lack of any Black girl inclusion or representation and started inviting friends to join. Not long after a group of six girls met every Thursday. Brown Girls Climbing Program fostering community, elevating diversity, providing fitness and social emotional development formed providing free instruction to Black and Brown girls.
Our Journey
Just as the sovereign joy and pride of community started flourishing, the hosting gym banned the Brown Girls Climbing using systemic racial practices delegated by corporate gym industry. With help of dedicated parents, the program restructured to provide access to nature based adventures. The pivot turned out to be the best discovery in independence and foster. All encompassing aspects of climbing is the root metaphor of our program and the fabric of this vision is resilience. What began as a passion project has evolved into something more. We’re proud of where we’ve been, many discoveries have come from our reliance on each other and nature for joy and peace.
We specialize in bridging the adventure gap of accessibility, equity, and inclusion with the vision of unapologetic sovereign joy with our community.
