Indoor Climbing Competition Formats
Boulder Climbing
Bouldering is climbing without rope. Climbers climb a sequence of moves from start to end called problems. comp-style problems feature gymnastic, coordination-based movements, spacious sequences, technical mastery. Problems are graded in degree of difficulty. There are various formats and scoring templates.
Sport Climbing
Sport climbing competitions incorporates two types of climbing on rope; top rope- rope is anchored at the top of the route, and lead climbing- rope is secured in quickdraws on the climbers way to the top. Rope climbing involves climbing a route tied to a rope. Routes are graded in degree of difficulty on a sequenced route. There are various formats for sport climbing. The strategy is to control the last hold.
Speed Climbing
Although speed climbing is best aligned with boulder training, speed competitions are typically hosted during the sport competition season for the easy of timing and facility space. Speed climbing is the dynamic, powerful and tactical approach of climbing the fastest on a set wall. Speed competitions are set in brackets for elimination based on the time placed on two initial attempts to climb. Speed climbing has evolved in the US, but not all speed competitions are the same due to the UIAA wall, height and hold standards and facility investments. There are less than 5 UIAA training spaces in the United States.
