Mindfulness in Climbing

The positive impact of incorporating a mindfulness practice into climbing enhances the neural pathways to emotional control focus, awareness and stress regulation, technical efficiency, precision and accuracy in over-all performance. This unique clinic explores the education and theories of mindfulness; shifting your mind from external distractions to internal focus. In this progressive 2 hour clinic, climbers develop applicable mindful skills to improve technique, movement, strength, commitment, mental focus and performance. Voices of the Valley

REI in partnership with Brown Girls Climb and The Brown Ascenders, are hosting a three month speaker series highlighting the accomplishments of three Bay Area notable climbers, Chelsea Griffie, Emily Taylor, and Miho Aida. Join us as we celebrate three unique voices from the valley. Kicking off this series in July is Chelsea Griffie, the first documented* African American woman to climb El Capitan and former program director of Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT). In August, we will hear from former USA climbing coach Emily Taylor, who has dedicated her life to creating inclusive climbing programs and opportunities for marginalized youth and who is one of the few African American women who has accomplished climbing The Nose and other classic routes of Yosemite Valley. Our final event will host social justice advocate in outdoor and environmental industry, Miho Aida of Balanced Rock, a guide for women of color wilderness retreat in Yosemite Valley. Come hear about their epics, favorite crag snacks, and how they have used their experience on the sharp end to advocate for others in the outdoors.

*documentation among marginalized athletes is limited and is part of the reason we are hosting the event!
